Spring Cleaning vs General Cleaning in Singapore: What's the Difference?
Every December the same WhatsApp message arrives: "Hi, I need cleaning before CNY, how much for a 4-room?" Half the time the person means a few hours of tidying before relatives come over. The other half, they mean the full reset: inside the cabinets, behind the fridge, the grease on the kitchen tiles, the window grilles nobody has touched since last year. Those are two different services, with different crews, different timings, and different prices, and booking the wrong one is the most common reason a cleaning job disappoints.
General cleaning is basic maintenance: one cleaner, 2 or 3 hours, the surfaces you see and use every day. Spring cleaning, which in Singapore means the same thing as deep cleaning, is a whole-home reset done once or twice a year by a crew of 3 to 5 cleaners over 4 to 5 hours. At MCAAS, spring cleaning is priced by unit size, from $248 for a small condo, $388 for a 3-room HDB, and $448 for a 4-room, with all equipment included and a re-clean guarantee if anything is missed.
The name itself causes some of the confusion. "Spring cleaning" comes from four-season countries, where people throw open the windows in April and clear out a winter's worth of dust. Singapore has no spring, but it has 80 to 84% humidity all year, so grease, dust mites, and mould rebuild every month rather than every season. Locally the phrase has come to mean the big festive clean before Chinese New Year, Hari Raya, Deepavali, Christmas, or the year-end. This guide explains what each service covers, where the line sits, and how to tell which one your home needs. If you already know you want the full reset, go straight to our spring cleaning service page.
What general cleaning is
General cleaning (also called regular, basic, or maintenance cleaning) is the routine work that keeps a home presentable between resets. One cleaner comes for a fixed block of 2 or 3 hours, works through the rooms in the order you set, and leaves. Nothing is emptied, moved, or stripped back to bare.
What a general clean usually covers
- Sweeping, vacuuming, and mopping floors
- Dusting and wiping tables, counters, and reachable shelves
- Cleaning the toilet bowl, basin, shower area, and bathroom floor
- Wiping the kitchen countertop, hob exterior, and sink
- Making beds, tidying, and taking out the rubbish
- Light ironing or laundry if agreed in advance
Who it suits and how often
General cleaning suits a home that is already in reasonable shape. It is booked weekly or fortnightly, often as a standing slot with the same cleaner, and its job is to stop the home from slipping. It does not include degreasing, cleaning inside cabinets, moving the fridge or washing machine, scrubbing wall tiles, or cleaning window grilles and tracks. Two or three hours is simply not enough time for that, and one cleaner cannot safely shift appliances alone.
That is the key point: a general cleaner who is asked to "also do the kitchen properly" in a 2-hour slot will do their best, but the grease on the tiles and the dust in the grilles will still be there at the end.
What spring cleaning is
Spring cleaning is a one-time, whole-home reset. A crew of 3 to 5 cleaners arrives with their own equipment, splits the flat by room, and works for 4 to 5 hours on an average 3- or 4-room unit. The target is everything a weekly clean skips: the inside of empty cabinets, behind the fridge, under and behind the washing machine, window grilles and frames, the exterior of aircon units and ceiling fans, kitchen wall tiles, and bathroom walls.
What makes it different from a general clean
Three things. First, depth: surfaces are scrubbed and degreased, not wiped. Second, reach: the crew moves what can be moved and cleans what is behind it. Third, manpower: a full crew can do in one afternoon what a single cleaner could not finish in a week of 2-hour visits.
Why it is done once or twice a year
In a temperate climate, once a year is enough. In Singapore it is not. Humidity in the high 70s to 80s percent means kitchen grease turns sticky within weeks, dust mites breed year-round, and wardrobe mould appears after a wet fortnight. Most families here book a spring clean twice a year: once before Chinese New Year, and once mid-year when six humid months have caught up with the kitchen and bathrooms. Regular general cleaning in between keeps the home from slipping back.

Spring cleaning vs general cleaning: the key differences
| Feature | General cleaning | Spring cleaning |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Routine upkeep | One-time, whole-home reset |
| How often | Weekly or fortnightly | Once or twice a year |
| Crew | 1 cleaner | 3 to 5 cleaners |
| Time on site | 2 or 3 hours | 4 or 5 hours (average 3- or 4-room flat) |
| Depth | Surfaces you see and use daily | Inside empty cabinets, behind appliances, grilles, wall tiles, fixtures |
| Kitchen degreasing | No | Yes |
| Equipment | Basic, often the household's own | Full kit provided by MCAAS |
| Typical trigger | Keeping the home tidy | CNY, Hari Raya, Deepavali, Christmas, year-end, guests, or a home that has slipped |
| Price at MCAAS | Hourly | By unit size: from $248 (condo under 400 sqft), $388 (3-room HDB), $448 (4-room HDB) |
Scope: surface-level vs top to bottom
A general clean handles what is in front of the cleaner. A spring clean handles what is behind, under, and inside: the cabinet interiors, the gap behind the fridge, the grease film on the splashback tiles, the grilles on every window in the flat.
Frequency: weekly vs seasonal
General cleaning is a schedule. Spring cleaning is an event, timed to a festival, a family visit, or the moment the home has visibly slipped.
Crew and time: one person vs a team
One cleaner for 2 or 3 hours cannot move a fridge or scrub four rooms of grilles. A crew of 3 to 5 for 4 to 5 hours can, which is why spring cleaning is priced per job rather than per hour.
Tools: a mop and a cloth vs degreasers and the full kit
General cleaning runs on a vacuum, a mop, and an all-purpose spray. Spring cleaning needs degreasers for the kitchen, descalers for the bathroom, neutral pH cleaner for cabinet surfaces, and brushes for tiles and grilles. MCAAS brings all of it; you supply nothing.
What is included in an MCAAS spring clean
This is the full job scope for a professional spring clean ($388 for a 3-room HDB, $448 for a 4-room), which takes roughly 4 to 5 hours with a crew of 3 to 5 cleaners on an average 3- or 4-room flat. All cleaning equipment and products are provided.

Which one do you need?
Book general cleaning if the home is in reasonable shape and you want it kept that way. One cleaner for 2 or 3 hours covers floors, dusting, bathrooms, and the daily kitchen surfaces.
Book spring cleaning if two or more of these sound familiar:
- It has been 6 months or more since the last full clean
- The hood or hob is sticky, or the kitchen wall tiles have a film of grease
- Bathroom grout has gone grey, or the wall tiles have soap scum
- Window grilles and tracks are dusty
- You are hosting for CNY, Hari Raya, Deepavali, Christmas, or a family event
- You want the inside of cabinets, behind the fridge, and under the washing machine done
- More sneezing at night, especially in the bedrooms
A few other jobs get booked as "spring cleaning" when they need a different checklist entirely:
- Moving out or handing a unit back to a landlord: that is end of tenancy cleaning, built around an empty unit and a landlord's inspection
- Contractors just finished: cement haze, gypsum, and sanding dust need post renovation cleaning
- Only the sofa, mattress, or carpet needs attention: book upholstery cleaning on its own, or add it to the spring clean on the same visit
Still not sure? Our which cleaning service do I need guide walks through every option.
When to book spring cleaning in Singapore
Most homes here need a full reset once or twice a year, because humidity never takes a season off. Good times to book:
- Before Chinese New Year. This is the classic Singapore spring clean. December and January weekend slots fill first, so WhatsApp early if that is your window.
- Before Hari Raya or Deepavali, for the same reason: guests, open house, and a home you want to be proud of.
- Before Christmas and the year-end. December is the busiest month of the year, with Christmas gatherings, school holidays, and the run-up to CNY all landing at once. Book early if you want a December date.
- Mid-year or during the school holidays, when six humid months have caught up with the kitchen and bathrooms and the family has time to empty cabinets.
- Before a new baby, a guest staying over, or a family event.
- Whenever the signs show: grey grout, a sticky hood, dusty grilles, or more sneezing at night.
Between spring cleans, a general clean every week or fortnight keeps the home from slipping back to the starting line.
How much does spring cleaning cost?
Spring cleaning is priced by the size of the home, not by the hour. The price covers a crew of 3 to 5 cleaners for roughly 4 to 5 hours on an average 3- or 4-room flat, all equipment and products, and the full room-by-room scope listed above.

FAQs about spring cleaning vs general cleaning
Is spring cleaning the same as general cleaning?
No. General cleaning is routine upkeep by one cleaner in 2 or 3 hours. Spring cleaning is a 3- to 5-person crew for 4 to 5 hours, reaching inside cabinets, behind appliances, and onto wall tiles and grilles.
Is spring cleaning the same as deep cleaning?
Yes. In Singapore both mean a one-time, whole-home clean by a full crew. At MCAAS it is one service at one price.
How often should I spring clean in Singapore?
Once or twice a year for most HDB flats and condos. Many families time one of those cleans before CNY and the other mid-year.
How long does a spring clean take?
Roughly 4 to 5 hours for an average 3- or 4-room flat with a full crew. Bigger homes take longer.
Do I need to empty my cabinets and fridge?
Only if you want the inside cleaned. Exteriors are always done. Empty cabinets and an empty fridge are cleaned inside at no extra cost. A full fridge can be emptied and cleaned by the crew for an additional quoted fee.
Can I add sofa or mattress cleaning to the same visit?
Yes. Upholstery extraction is quoted per item and can be done on the same day as the spring clean.
Do I need to be home?
No, but you can be. The team works room by room, so you can stay in another room or leave the keys with the concierge.
Do I need to supply anything?
No. All cleaning equipment and products are provided, and the products are family- and pet-safe.
Conclusion
General cleaning keeps a home tidy. Spring cleaning brings it back to the standard you had on move-in day. Most Singapore homes need both: a general clean every week or two, and a full crew once or twice a year to reach the grease, dust, and mould that weekly wiping never touches. If the kitchen tiles are sticky, the grilles are grey, or CNY is six weeks away, the answer is the spring clean.
