Acid Wash for Tiles: Reviving Singapore Floors

Acid washing is the strongest treatment a tiled floor can get, and it exists for one specific problem: alkaline residue that ordinary cleaning cannot dissolve. After a renovation, that means cement smears from tiling work, grout haze left when the tilers wiped down too late, and mortar splashes around wet areas. A diluted acid solution breaks these down chemically so they can be rinsed away — something no amount of mopping will achieve.

But the same chemistry that dissolves cement will also dissolve marble. Acid washing is genuinely hazardous to the wrong surfaces and, handled carelessly, to the person doing it. This guide explains when an acid wash is actually needed, which floors tolerate it, which it will permanently damage, and how it is done safely. Homeowners who have just finished a renovation and found cement film, grout haze, or a white bloom on their new tiles that regular cleaning won’t shift. Also useful if someone has quoted you an acid wash and you want to understand what you are agreeing to — and whether your floor can take it.

When an acid wash is actually needed — and when it isn’t

An acid wash is a targeted fix, not a routine deep clean.

Signs you genuinely need an acid wash

  • Grout haze: a cloudy, whitish film across the tile face that reappears after mopping. It is cement-based grout residue that has cured onto the surface. Water moves it around; it does not remove it.
  • Cement smears and mortar splashes: hardened grey patches near walls, doorways and bathroom fittings where tiling or hacking work happened.
  • Efflorescence: white powdery salt deposits migrating out of fresh screed or grout lines, common in newly tiled bathrooms and balconies.
  • The scratch test: if a residue scraped with a fingernail or plastic scraper comes away as a chalky flake, it is likely cementitious — acid-soluble.

Signs you don’t

  • General construction dust, fine powder, paint overspray: these need thorough vacuuming, damp mopping and mechanical scrubbing, not acid. Reaching for acid here adds risk with no benefit.

If in doubt, treat acid washing as the last resort — after vacuuming, degreasing and scrubbing have failed, on a surface confirmed to tolerate acid.

Which surfaces tolerate acid — and which it destroys

This is the part most DIY guides get dangerously wrong. Acid does not know the difference between cement residue and a cement-based or calcium-based floor, and no cleaning product reverses etching.

Generally tolerant (with correct dilution and quick rinsing)

  • Porcelain and homogeneous tiles — the standard choice in most Singapore renovations; dense, low-porosity and acid-resistant.
  • Glazed ceramic tiles — the glaze resists acid, though prolonged contact can dull some decorative or metallic glazes.
  • Unglazed clay and quarry tiles — tolerant but porous, so they must be wetted first and rinsed thoroughly.

Never acid wash

  • Marble, limestone, travertine — these are calcium carbonate. Acid reacts with them on contact, permanently etching the polish into dull, rough patches. Even a splash or an acid-laden rinse mop leaves marks.
  • Terrazzo and cement screed floors — terrazzo is marble chips in a cement matrix; acid attacks both.
  • Polished granite and other polished natural stone — more acid-resistant than marble, but strong acids can dull the polish and corrode resin fills.
  • Cement grout itself, with prolonged contact — the acid that removes grout haze will also eat into grout lines if left too long; timing and dilution are technical decisions, not guesswork.
  • Metal fixtures, floor traps, stainless steel strips and aluminium frames — acid corrodes and stains them; mask or avoid them.

One more caution: some homogeneous tiles mimic marble convincingly, and some “marble” is genuine. A professional will test an inconspicuous corner before committing the whole floor. If you are not certain what your floor is, do not guess with acid.

How a proper acid wash is done

Professional or DIY on a small confirmed-safe area, the sequence matters as much as the chemical.

1. Dry preparation. Vacuum and sweep thoroughly. Acid applied over loose dust turns into abrasive sludge and is wasted on debris instead of the bonded residue. 2. Protect everything acid can harm. Mask skirting, metal strips, floor traps and fittings; cover anything a splash could reach. 3. Ventilate before opening the bottle. Open windows and doors, run fans to move air out, and keep the aircon off so fumes are not recirculated. Acid fumes irritate the eyes, throat and lungs. 4. Wear proper protection. Chemical-resistant gloves, goggles, covered footwear and long sleeves at minimum; a respirator is sensible in enclosed bathrooms. 5. Never mix chemicals. Acid must never meet bleach or chlorine-based products — the reaction releases toxic chlorine gas. Clear the area of other cleaning products entirely. 6. Dilute correctly, acid into water. Always add acid to water, never the reverse. Too strong a mix etches tiles and burns grout lines; too weak does nothing. 7. Pre-wet the floor. Dampening the tiles stops porous surfaces from drawing acid deep into the tile body and grout. 8. Apply in small sections, short contact time. Work area by area, agitate with a pad or brush, and never let the solution dry on the floor. 9. Neutralise. Rinse with an alkaline solution — commonly a soda ash or bicarbonate mix — to stop the reaction. Skip this and active acid stays in grout lines and tile pores, still working long after the job looks finished. 10. Rinse repeatedly and extract. Multiple clean-water rinses, with a wet vacuum where possible, until no slippery film remains. Judge the result only once the floor is dry — wet tiles hide both leftover haze and fresh etching.

Common mistakes we’re called in to fix

  • Acid on marble or terrazzo. The most expensive mistake here — etched stone needs professional honing and re-polishing, a restoration job rather than a cleaning job.
  • Letting the acid dry on the floor. It concentrates as the water evaporates, etching rings and patches even on porcelain grout lines.
  • Skipping neutralising. The floor looks fine on handover day; weeks later grout lines crumble because residual acid kept reacting.
  • Using stronger mixes when the first pass “didn’t work”. Usually the residue was never acid-soluble — paint, silicone or adhesive smears need solvents or mechanical removal, and more acid just raises the risk.
  • No ventilation in an enclosed bathroom. Fumes in a small tiled room build up fast; people underestimate this until their eyes and throat are burning.
  • Acid washing when a scrub would do. If the floor is dirty rather than cement-stained, the non-acid route is safer and just as effective.

DIY or professional? For this job, the honest answer

A small patch of grout haze on confirmed porcelain, treated with a proper off-the-shelf grout haze remover, correct dilution, gloves, goggles, good airflow and thorough neutralising — a careful owner can manage that.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will an acid wash damage my tiles?

Not if the surface is genuinely acid-tolerant — porcelain, homogeneous and glazed ceramic tiles handle a correctly diluted, properly rinsed acid wash well. It will permanently damage marble, limestone, travertine, terrazzo and cement-based floors, and can dull polished granite.

Can I acid wash marble floors that have cement stains?

No. Acid etches marble on contact, and the etching is often worse than the stain. Cement residue on marble needs careful mechanical removal by a stone specialist, sometimes followed by honing and re-polishing.

What is the white haze on my new tiles, and will mopping remove it?

It is almost certainly grout haze — cement-based grout residue cured onto the tile face during renovation. Mopping redistributes it but cannot dissolve it; that is the problem an acid wash (or a grout haze remover on small areas) exists to solve.

Is acid washing the same as floor deep scrubbing?

No. Deep scrubbing uses machines with alkaline or neutral cleaners to remove dirt, dust and grease, and is safe on almost every hard floor. Acid washing is a chemical treatment for cement-based residue only; most post-renovation floors need scrubbing, and only some need acid.

How soon after renovation should the floor be acid washed?

Once the wet works have cured and all trades are finished — there is no point treating a floor that will collect more mortar splashes next week. It is best done as part of the full post-renovation clean, before furniture goes in.
